How Do I Winterize My Pool?

Winterizing your pool is essential here in the Central Maryland area where freezing temperatures visit us every winter season. Proper winterization protects your pool equipment, plumbing, and structure from freeze damage and makes reopening in spring much easier. 

Here’s a quick guide to winterizing your pool:

• Clean it thoroughly. Remove any existing debris using a skimmer net and vacuum, and brush the walls and floor of the pool to eliminate any algae or buildup. A clean pool reduces the chance of stains and prevents algae growth during winter.
• Balance the water. Before closing the pool, test and balance the water to appropriate chlorine level, pH, alkalinity, etc.
• Shock the water. Shock the pool with a chlorine-based or non-chlorine shock, and let it circulate for at least 24 hours. This helps kill bacteria and keep the water sanitized during the off-season.
• Lower the water level. Depending on your pool type and the type of cover you’ll be using, you’ll need to lower the water level. For above-ground pools, lower it just below the skimmer. For inground pools with vinyl liners, go about 1 inch below the skimmer.
• Drain and protect equipment. Completely drain water from the pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator to prevent freeze damage. Remove drain plugs and allow all equipment to air dry, then store it properly.
• Cover the pool. Install a high-quality pool cover that fits securely, and prevents debris and sunlight from entering. A tight, secure cover keeps your water cleaner and reduces the chances of algae growth.
• Check on it regularly. Even during winter, it’s wise to check the pool occasionally. Remove heavy snow loads and ensure the cover stays in place to prevent accidental damage and reduce the work required in spring.

When Should I Open My Pool for the Season?

The best time to open your pool for the season can vary, but once temperatures consistently reach around 70 degrees – and stay there – you should be good to go. That said, once the weather is right for it, you won’t want to wait too long to open things up.

What issues can arise when you put off opening your pool?

• Algae growth, especially if you use a mesh cover that allows sunlight to reach the water, as algae thrive in warm, stagnant water.
• Shorter swimming season, as opening it earlier lets you get more enjoyment from it.
• Pollen accumulation, especially if you have heavy tree coverage.
• Imbalanced water, which will increasingly become dirtier, cloudier, and harder to correct.

Opening your pool earlier also gives you more time to inspect for and handle any repairs. From cracked tiles to leaky equipment, it’s better to find and address issues before the hot weather hits – and pool service companies become busier.

Just remember that sudden temperature drops can still happen in early spring, so make good and sure that freezing temperatures are behind you to avoid damaging pipes or equipment. If you open the pool early, but get an unexpected cold snap, running the pump continuously can help prevent freezing.
