What Size Pump Do I Need for My Pool?
A pool pump is kind of like the heart of your pool’s circulation system. Its main role is to pull water from the pool – where it can be pushed through your filter to get all the debris and contaminants out – then return the clean water back into the pool. A properly functioning pool pump also helps distribute chemicals evenly, prevents algae growth, and supports overall water quality.
All that said, choosing the right size pump for your pool is clearly a must. Getting a pump that’s too small won’t clean your pool effectively, while one that’s too large can waste energy and even damage your plumbing.
How do I determine the size of the pool pump I need?
- Figure out the volume of your pool, in gallons. If you have your manufacturer guide, this information should be in there. Once you have the total volume, the goal for your pump will be to turn over all the water at least once every 8 hours.
- Figure out your gallons per minute (GPM). Since most pumps are rated in gallons per minute (GPM), it’s time to do some math. Your pump will need to complete one turnover in 8 hours, so take your total number of gallons and divide it by 8 to get gallons per hour (GPH). Then, divide that total by 60 to get your GPM. (Total Gallons / 8 = GPH, GPH / 60 = GPM)
- Figure out total dynamic head (TDH): Total dynamic head (TDH) refers to the resistance the water faces as it travels through pipes, fittings, and pool equipment. The longer and more complex your plumbing system, the higher the TDH. You can usually find the TDH in your system documentation – or a pool pro can calculate it for you.
Once you know your required flow rate and estimated TDH, you can look at pump performance charts provided by manufacturers. These charts show how much water a pump can move at various TDH levels. Choose a pump that hits your target flow rate at your system’s TDH.
It’s also worth considering variable-speed pumps, which are now standard in many areas due to energy efficiency regulations. Unlike single-speed pumps that run full-blast all the time, variable-speed pumps can be adjusted to run at different speeds depending on the task – i.e., lower speeds for filtration, higher for vacuuming or running water features.
Finally, think about your pool’s features. If you have a spa, waterfall, or attached solar heater, those extras will influence pump size, as well.
Do I Need a Pool Heater?
Most pools don’t need a heater, so whether or not you invest in one depends on various things – like how often you use the pool, your personal comfort preferences, the climate in your area, etc. While not every pool requires a heater, adding one can significantly extend your swimming season and increase overall enjoyment, making it well worth purchasing.
Consider this: When nights are chilly or the days are unseasonably cold, an unheated pool water might rarely reach comfortable swimming temperatures. A heater ensures the water stays warm enough for swimming even when the outside temperature dips. This is especially important for families with young children, older adults, or anyone that might be more sensitive to cold water.
Another consideration is how you use your pool. If you only use it occasionally in the peak summer, a heater may not be worth the cost or maintenance. But if you want to swim in spring, early fall, and at all hours of the day, a heater is often an essential. It adds months of use to your investment and allows you to enjoy the pool on your schedule – not just when the weather cooperates.
