You will need to replace the DE after two backwashing, so you will need DE throughout the pool season.

How Can I Improve Water Circulation in My Home Swimming Pool or Spa?

Without proper water circulation in your pool or spa, debris can accumulate, algae can form, and chemicals may not distribute evenly. How can you best optimize your pool’s circulation?

• Make sure your jets are properly positioned. If your pool or spa has multiple return jets (where filtered water re-enters the pool), angle them slightly downward and in the same direction. This helps create a circular water flow, ensuring even chemical distribution and helps to push debris toward the skimmer.  
• Keep your skimmers and drain systems clear. Skimmers work hard to pull in surface debris, so keep them clean and free of blockages. If your pool has a main drain, make sure it’s functioning properly to pull water from the bottom of the pool, preventing stagnant areas.  
• Run your pool pump regularly. Most pools require 10 – 12 hours of circulation per day, but this should be properly balanced based on your needs. Running your pool pump too little can lead to poor circulation, which leads to algae growth. Variable speed pumps should be run at higher speeds (RPMs) during the day and lower RPMs at night.
• Regularly clean and wash the filters. A dirty filter restricts water flow, reducing circulation. Backwash your sand and DE (diatomaceous earth) filters when the pressure gauge reads 8 – 10 psi higher than the normal range. Cartridge filters should be rinsed regularly and replaced when necessary.
